// Why I’m not Reading Fifty Shades of Grey//
I first came across Fifty Shades of Grey when someone at work mentioned I should look into reading it. I was like “Sure, I’ll look into it when I have time.” But I didn’t have to look into it. All of the sudden Fifty Shades was everywhere, and by everywhere, I mean, everywhere. Women were reading it at my work, people were reading it on the train, my waitress was gushing about it, even guys were talking about it and how they wanted to read it.
I understand, and recognize, that pornography has become a rampant part of our culture, I get it. But beyond the fact that porn is disgusting, and wrong, we also need to see that the porn industry mistreats and disrespects women. A woman’s body is not meant to go through what it does in this specific industry, and quite frankly, these women are commonly perc’d up and don’t even know what’s happening to their bodies. We, as a culture, which wants to stand for respect and justice and dignity, should say no to this industry. Because pornography has become so rampant, those who are influenced by porn are misled, believing that what they see on their computers, is what real life is going to be, which leads to a lot of disappointed, angry people.
In the same breath, those who are reading Fifty Shades, specifically women, are addicted to this type of writing. I’ve heard it multiple time be referred to as “girl porn.” Well if that’s what it really is, I’m going to stay far far away. I am trying as hard as I can to keep my mind and body pure for my future husband, and I’m not trying to get all holy roller, because I understand, not every one cares about doing that, and I respect that you have the right to choose how you live your life. Regardless, I’m staying away from Fifty Shades, I don’t want words to pollute my mind. I want everything to be fresh and exciting when I find the person I’m meant to be with, not a disappointment because I chose to expose myself to this type of entertainment. I don’t need it, and very likely, neither do you.
